Sophia L. Torres is the Founder and Artistic Director of Psophonia Dance Company. She has choreographed over thirty original works under Psophonia and has received awards and recognition for her innovative choreography including the Artist Fellowship Award in Choreography and three Artist Project Awards for arts in education programming from Houston Arts Alliance. In 2011, Sophia’s work, The Long Hallway, was selected for performance in Weekend of Texas Contemporary Dance at Miller Outdoor Theatre. Since graduating from the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts and Southern Methodist University, Sophia has performed with several outstanding companies and worked with such talented choreographers as Bill T. Jones, Susan Marshall and Stephan Koplowitz. Sophia has created new works for Rice University’s Dance Theatre, University of Houston’s Dance Ensemble and Houston Community College’s Performing Ensemble. In 2009, Sophia received the prestigious Teaching Artist Fellowship from Montalvo Arts Center in Saratoga, California - one of four awarded nationwide. She has taught at Houston Community College Northwest and for Stages Repertory Theatre's Young Actor's Conservatory. Currently she is on faculty at the University of Houston. She continues to create, implement and manage in-school residency programs centered on arts integration through Young Audiences of Houston.
