Psophonia in Action


Sophia L. Torres is Founder and Artistic Director of Psophonia Dance Company.  She has choreographed numerous works under Psophonia and has received awards and recognition for her innovative choreography. Torres’ work has been presented at Miller Outdoor Theatre, Cincy Fringe Festival, 254 Dance Festival, Brazos Contemporary Dance Festival, Alma Thomas Theater at Southwestern University, Bethell Hall at St. David's Episcopal Church and Performing Arts Center, Texas A&M University Corpus Christi. Her choreography was seen at the 2017 Superbowl LI- Houston LIVE Event at Discovery Green.  This spring she collaborated with Dr. Rob Smith, director of AURA Contemporary Ensemble in Memory Web presented at the MATCH.

Torres has perform with several outstanding companies and worked with talented choreographers including Bill T. Jones, Susan Marshall, Stephan Koplowitz and Karen Stokes. She has created new works for Rice University’s Dance Theatre, University of Houston’s Dance Ensemble and Houston Community College’s Performing Ensemble. Torres has taught at the University of Houston, University of St. Thomas and Houston Community College.  Most recently, she worked with Main Street Theater on the play, Mockingbird directed by Troy Scheid and Ramona Quimby directed by Robin Robinson. Through her company, Torres works with Young Audiences of Houston providing in-school residency programs and performances centered on arts integration.
